Ós US: Vefnaður samfélags og sköpunar.

Listafólkið. MYND AÐSEND

Sýning fór fram í Hillebrandtshúsi í Gamla bænum í Blönduósi og veitti gestum innsýn í skapandi samtal sem myndaðist þegar alþjóðlegir listamenn kynntu sér landslag, menningu og textílhefðir Íslands. Hver listamaður setti fram einstakt sjónarhorn og skoðaði hugtök eins og sjálfsmynd, ferli og stað í gegnum efni, vefnað og tilraunir með textíl. 

Listamenn í starfsdvöl hjá Ós Textílstarfsdvöl í gegnum Ós Textílmiðstöð Íslands voru — Angelica Falkeling (Svíþjóð), Caroline Forsyth (Bandaríkin), Larisa Usich (Bandaríkin), Michaëlle Sergile (Kanada) og Rachel Illingworth (Ástralía) — kynntu nýverið ÓS US, samsýningu á textílverkum sem unnin voru á dvöl þeirra í Blönduósi.

Sýningin opnaði 26. október og stóð til 27. október 2025, og bauð samfélaginu og gestum að upplifa verk listamannanna og tengjast gegnum sameiginlega áhuga á samtímatextíl.

Sem samfélagsmeðlimur er það innblástur að sjá hversu mikið þessar starfsdvölur styrkja líf bæjarins. Að styðja verkefni eins og Ós Textílstarfsdvöl snýst ekki einungis um að fagna list — það er fjárfesting í sameiginlegri þróun og framtíð Blönduóss. Þegar listamenn frá öllum heimshornum koma hingað, koma þeir með ný sjónarhorn, hugmyndir og orku sem skila sér til samfélagsins löngu eftir dvölina. Þeir minna okkur á að jafnvel í litlum bæ getur sköpun ekki takmarkast.

Hillebrandtshús hefur gríðarlega, ónotaða möguleika. Sem eitt elsta timburhús Íslands stendur það bæði sem sögulegur minnisvarði og lifandi rými fyrir list, samtal og samveru samfélagsins. Að endurvekja og viðhalda slíkum rýmum er ekki bara varðveisla — það er trú á framtíðina. Þegar við kjósum að styðja menningarhús í stað þess að láta þau falla í niðurníðslu, fjárfestum við í sameiginlegu samhengi, stolti og möguleikum. Slík rými eru mikilvægir miðlar fyrir sköpun, menntun og tengsl — ómissandi fyrir blómlegt byggðarlag.

Blönduós hefur ótakmarkaðan möguleika til að verða listamiðstöð. Fyrir utan eina starfsdvöl er bærinn heimili vaxandi textílmiðstöðvar, safns, hæfileikaríkra listamanna og nágrannaverkefna og starfsdvala sem mynda saman ríkt skapandi vistkerfi. Með því að viðurkenna og efla þetta net opnum við dyr fyrir menningartengda ferðaþjónustu, samstarf og ný tækifæri fyrir íbúa og gestalista. Listir geta orðið hornsteinn sjálfbærrar þróunar í dreifbýli — sem heiðrar hefðina á sama tíma og hún býður nýsköpun velkomna.

Þessi verkefni stuðla einnig að vexti og menntun fyrir fólk á öllum aldri. Börn læra að list sé tjáningarmáti og vandamálalausn; fullorðnir kynnast nýjum hugsunar- og sköpunarleiðum; og eldri kynslóðir sjá hefðir sínar endurspeglaðar í nýjum formum.  Með því að styðja og taka þátt í þessum verkefnum styrkjum við menningarvitund, hvetjum til símenntunar og sköpum merkingarbær tengsl milli kynslóða. List hefur mátt til að sameina fólk — að gera okkur stolt af heimabyggð okkar og forvitin um heiminn í kringum okkur. Með því að halda áfram að styðja starfsdvölur og sýningar eins og ÓS US, tryggjum við að Blönduós verði staður þar sem sköpun blómstrar, hugmyndir deilast frjálst og list heldur áfram að vefa samfélagið saman.

Ós US: Weaving Community and Creativity

The artists in residence at the Ós Textile Residency through the Icelandic Textile Centre — Angelica Falkeling (Sweden), Caroline Forsyth (USA), Larisa Usich (USA), Michaëlle Sergile (Canada), and Rachel Illingworth (Australia) — recently presented ÓS US, a group exhibition featuring textile works created during their stay in Blönduós.

Hosted at Hillebrandtshús in Old Town Blönduós, the exhibition offered visitors a glimpse into the creative dialogue that unfolded as international artists engaged with Iceland’s landscape, culture, and textile traditions. Each artist brought a distinct perspective, exploring identity, process, and place through fibers, weaving, and material experimentation. The exhibition opened on October 26 and continued through October 27, 2025, inviting the local community and visitors to experience the artists’ work firsthand and connect through a shared appreciation of contemporary textile art.

As a community member, it is inspiring to see how much these residencies contribute to the life of our town. Supporting programs like the Ós Textile Residency is not just about celebrating art — it is about investing in our collective growth and the future of Blönduós. When artists from around the world come here, they bring new perspectives, ideas, and energy that ripple through the community long after their stay. Their presence reminds us that even in a small town, creativity has no boundaries.

Hillebrandtshús itself holds incredible, untapped potential. As one of the oldest timber houses in Iceland, it stands as both a historical landmark and a living space for art, conversation, and community gatherings. Revitalizing and maintaining places like this is not only an act of preservation — it is an act of belief in the future. When we choose to foster cultural houses rather than let them fall into disrepair, we invest in a shared sense of belonging, pride, and possibility. These spaces serve as anchors for creativity, education, and connection — essential ingredients for a thriving rural community. Blönduós has untapped potential to become an art haven. Beyond a single residency, the town is home to a thriving textile center, a museum, talented local artisans, and neighboring art programs and residencies that together form a rich creative ecosystem. By recognizing and nurturing this network, we open the door for cultural tourism, collaboration, and new opportunities for both residents and visiting artists. The arts can become a cornerstone of sustainable rural development — one that honors tradition while inviting innovation.These programs also help foster growth and education for people of all ages.

Children learn that art is a form of communication and problem-solving; adults engage with new ways of thinking and making; and older generations see their traditions reflected in new forms. By supporting and participating in these initiatives, we strengthen cultural literacy, encourage lifelong learning, and create meaningful connections across generations. Art has the power to bring people together — to make us proud of where we live and curious about the wider world.
